Associate Professor Catriona Hurd works in the Department of Botany, University of Otago, New Zealand. She leads an active research team, who study the effects of anthropogenic change on seaweed-based temperate reefs in Southern New Zealand. Research interests include: seaweed primary production and the supply of energy to higher trophic levels; seaweed hydrodynamics and biomechanics; effects of ocean acidification on calcifying and non-calcifying seaweeds and phytoplankton; nitrogen uptake and assimilation; the impact of the invasive seaweed Undaria pinnatifida on coastal ecosystems. She ran the first New Zealand Ocean Acidification workshop in 2007, and is the current Director of the New Zealand Ocean Acidification Research theme.
